The "Bath Sponge" or Spongia officinalis, is the typical commercially used sponge. Sponges are found on the sea floor and can take up to 40 years to grow to the size of a baseball. This sponge is found in the Mediterranean Sea, but harvesting has resulted in a decrease in population recently. Sponges do not contain body systems like many organisms, they just have a series of canals. They use the canals to transport nutrients and to reproduce. They perform asexual reproduction within themselves to create offspring.
